We installed a backup camera in the Vanagon last year, but we had several issues. First of all, the camera was big and more fitting for a large bus. We could not find a spot to mount it easily because the cable was too large. We mounted it under the bumper but the aspect left a lot to be desired. The camera stopped working all of a sudden, so we decided to replace it. This time, we went with a simple license plate backup camera. The installation was fairly straight forward, and the picture looks amazingly good. Click through to see how we did it.
The Syncromobil is a 1989 Swedish Doka (Vanagon Truck) that has been converted into very nice camper that includes a shower. Samba user volkmar posted pics of his creation. This rugged camper can go just about anywhere and keep you self contained. The camping quarters are not roomy, but include a toilet, shower, table, and cooking facilities. This 1988 Wolfsburg Vanagon recently appeared for sale on Craigslist. Amazingly, the price was only $14,500. The van has had a Subaru Legacy EJ25 boxer four engine installed as well as a fresh coat of paint. I’m not a fan of the blackout wheels with silver, but otherwise this Vanagon looks great. Click through to see more of this van and a walkthrough video.

Attaching a rear tent to your Vanagon is a fantastic idea if you’re camping. You could use it for showering, changing clothes, storing larger items outside, or simply blocking the sun. I’m sure you could come up with a few more uses for the rear Vanagon tent. What would you do with a rear tent on your Vanagon? Let me know in the comments.
Looking for larger wheels for your Vanagon? Derek Drew has a very complete post about fitting 16″ wheels on the Vanagon. The wheels he likes come off of a RV and Derek was able to get them to fit his van. Derek has posted very detailed instructions on how to get them, as well as a question and answer section about other wheels (including the GoWesty wheels). Check out Derek’s website and see if you agree. His post is long, but an interesting read. For the record, I think the GoWesty 16″ wheels are perfect.
