If you have issues with keeping your refrigerator lit while driving you might try this mod. It’s a fairly simple thing to place an aluminum shield around the fridge vent. This one came from a company called Northwest Campers, but they have since gone out of business. One commenter on the original post at Vanagonauts said this mod was unnecessary, but others swear by it. Take it with a grain of salt. More pictures after the jump.
We all want more space in our Vanagons, but we are limited by its size. Check out this extended Vanagon Westy Camper built in 1985. These were customized in Germany in the 1980’s but never made it to the states. It is 70 inches longer than a standard Westy and provides more room for all your goodies. Perhaps this one should be called the “All About the Bass” Westy. Or, as one Samba user put it, “extra butt syncro.” Another pic after the jump.
What happens when Audi creates a special support vehicle for a race? This Vanagon is described as a “VW / Audi T25 Quattro Support vehicle, for the Paris Dakkar rally circa 1987.” The body kit incredibly interesting. The curved lines make the 1980’s Vanagon look modern, and it gives the stance a completely different look. The wheels are almost certainly Audi rims and along with the emblem make this vehicle an Audi-Vanagon.
This is a scary hack, but if you pull it off it’s very cool. Samba user vwlovr posted his experience adding a ragtop sunroof from StreetBeat Customs to his Vanagon. He had to cut a 40×40 hole in the roof which is no small feat, but he pulled it off. SteatBeat’s website is apparently offline so I have no idea if these are still available. Click through to see how he did it.
What do you get when you take the famous Island Hopper Vanagon from Magnum P.I., chop 11 inches from its height, and place it over a Toyota MR2? The picture says it all. The guys at LeMons New England gave it a shot for their Halloween Hooptiefest. They turned the Vanagon into a bit of a racer.
The recipe: Take one third-gen Toyota MR2 that was wrapped around a shopping-mall light pole in a fit of ill-advised hoonage, take a Vanagon body and chop 11? out of its height, do some cutting and pasting. Yes, it is now an MR2 with a giant box-shaped airbrake and 800 pounds of additional weight… and one of the greatest race cars we have ever seen. Will it be faster than the GoWesty LeMons Vanagon, with its VR6 power? We’ll see on Saturday.

The guys over at Subagon sure know how to redo a Vanagon. This 1986 Syncro, called “The Giraffe,” has recently been redone and has a crazy list of upgrades. While planning the project, they intended to wrap the van in a skin print and call the van Giraffe. Halfway through they scrapped the skin idea, but kept the name. Click through to see the insane list of upgrades and more pics.
